Let’s Disconnect a Little Bit

Given certain circumstances I think everyone in life needs to take a deep breath and let go a little bit. Ever since social media became a normal in everyday life, we tend to fix ourselves on the perfect lifestyle. I’ve been guilty of it many times, but when I learn to disconnect from social media when I can, I found more connected with what I had. I think this creates a domino effect when we find ourselves fixing on a certain lifestyle and when we don’t have or achieve it, it can mess with out mental state of mind. It creates unneeded pressure in our lives which can stress us out, cause anxiety, and take us away form what we’re actually succeeding at in life.

According to Bright Futures NYC, 40% of people who use social media feel anxious after logging off of the app. While the other 60% said they need to take a break from it. Basically, 100% of the people from this study didn’t say they feel better after using it or more productive. Obliviously there’s business and personal reasons to use social media. But if your mindlessly scrolling using valuable minutes of your day to be productive whether it’s at work or missing on time with friends and family it’ll catch up to you. I think social media can be great, but the risk outweighs the rewards.

I forget which podcast I was listening to, but I heard this statistic about Twitter that changed my morning routine. There is so much information on Twitter your brain tries to process it all at once every time you read a new post. If you were to wake up in the morning and scroll on Twitter for 5 or more minutes, there is enough information to cause your brain to not fully wake up in the morning and cause it to feel panicked. The feeling is equivalent to having 100 people come into your bedroom right when you wake up and ask you 100 different questions. There’s no way anyone would enjoy that. The amount of unnecessary information we feed our brains right when we wake up is ridiculous and I courage you to not do that to yourself.

The point of this is to let your brain relax and to focus on the things that matter so your mental heath doesn’t suffer. When we wish and want for things we don’t have we stress ourselves out and start the comparison game. When that happens we can feel depressed because we think were not enough or were not doing enough with our lives. Take a week detox from the socials so you can reset and have some peace of mind, focus on what you have, and focus on where you are.
